The Kansas City Star: The Perfect Song for Kansas City
"Yes, I love 'the obvious one,' especially when played
by a pep band celebrating a trip to Kansas City for a
basketball tournament - first heard (by me) in March
1963 at Fort Hays. Forty years later, while in Texas
for her sister's birthday, my wife and I stopped in to
see our nephew Steve's band at a local club. We
entered a packed house during the first set, and on
cue the band struck up 'our song'-perfect for a
hatless, introverted Yankee wearing topsiders,
relaxed-fit jeans and a golf shirt. A Waitress with
big hair swept us though the crowd to a VIP table at
the edge of the dance floor. God love 'em, West of
Nowhere (www.westofnowhere.com)
played my favorite
version of 'the obvious one (Kansas City)' at W.W.
Fairfield's, Richardson, Texas, the night before
Maxine's 60th birthday."
